Description
The JP271SW Cornet builds on the offering of the JP171SW providing a higher specification option that is increasingly popular with training bands and advanced students.
Having been described as having a very free blowing feel, and a rich sound throughout the range, the JP271SW Cornet was the personal pick of Pete Collins (Principal Cornet in Thoresby Colliery Band and Musical Director of the Foresters Band) who also described it saying, “Whilst testing the instrument I was really impressed with the evenness of sound quality, and the ease of playing in the upper register.”
The JP271SW Cornet outperforms many more expensive instruments and is becoming extremely popular within training bands in the UK. John Packer Ltd have worked closely with internationally renowned trumpet and cornet designers and manufacturers Smith-Watkins and have worked personally with Dr Richard Smith to ensure that the JP271SW Cornet benefits from the prestige of Smith-Watkins’ instruments.
An exclusive and specially designed Smith-Watkins leadpipe was created for the cornet driving excellent articulation and sound projection.
The JP271SW Cornet also features 1st and 3rd triggers, high tolerance monel valves and a one piece bell, a professional feature for extra resonance.
The JP271SW Cornet is supplied with a JP603 (4B) mouthpiece as standard and comes equipped with a high quality case for maximum protection.
The case is lightweight, well-designed and attractively styled. Backpack straps and a comfortable shoulder strap are included as standard. The case also includes a small external storage pocket. This enables players to store small accessories and sheet music with their instrument.

Pete Collins – Principal Cornet of the Thoresby Colliery Band, Musical Director of the Foresters Band and a well known teacher
“I recently bought one of these instruments on behalf of the band that I conduct, to replace a tired old Sovereign for one of my front row cornet players. The price was a big factor in the decision to make the purchase, though I had already heard good reports about the cornet. The addition of the Smith Watkins lead pipe is a real stroke of genius, as I believe no-one makes cornets better than Richard Smith. As a result the cornet has a very free blowing feel, and a rich sound throughout the range. Whilst testing the instrument I was really impressed with the evenness of sound quality, and the ease of playing in the upper register. Intonation was good and whilst the notes just above the stave were a little sharp (as they are on most cornets) the trigger soon rectified that. We are now looking at replacing more of our older cornets with the JP271LMkII (SW) cornet, which at its bargain price puts a lot of its more expensive competitors to shame. Whether you are a student on a budget or a band looking to kit out a section without breaking the bank, you could do far worse than to look to JP.”
